Illinois – Springfield digs out from record-setting snowfall

Sunday’s snowfall obliterated the record for the highest snow total on March 24, according to the National Weather Service. The previous record was 2.4 inches in 1947.

The storm may have also  set a new Springfield record for snow in a 24-hour period.

The early spring snowstorm dumped 17.4 inches at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport and 18.5 inches elsewhere in the city.

Prior to this past weekend, Springfield’s all-time record for the most snow in a 24-hour period was 15 inches, which fell Feb. 28, 1900.

The heavy snowfall caused a shed to collapse at Carter Brothers Lumber in Sherman.

Kathy Seebold, a manager at Carter Brothers, said no one was inside the 30-by-50-foot shed when it collapsed around 6:45 a.m. Monday.

Nearby workers heard popping and cracking noises just before the collapse.

“The weight of the snow snapped one of the trusses. When one comes down, they all come down,” Seebold said.

Seebold expects that they will be able to recover the lumber that was stored in the shed. She did not have a dollar estimate of the damage.

Among the snow totals reported by weather spotters and others on the NWS website:

* 18.5 inches, Springfield
* 17.7 inches, Taylorville
* 17.1 inches, Sherman
* 17 inches, Williamsville
* 16.1 inches, Jerome
* 16 inches, Pana
* 15 inches, Lake Springfield
* 11 inches, Beardstown
Springfield’s “Most snow in 24 Hours” records include:

1. 15 inches, Feb. 28, 1900.

2. 13.3 inches, Jan. 1-2, 1999.

3. 12.6 inches, Jan. 30-31, 1914.

4. 11.3 inches, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2008.

5. 11.2 inches, Feb. 12-13, 2007.
