A wintry blast is set to hit the lower South Island tonight, bringing with it snow.
Strong, cold southwesterlies are forecast to spread across the lower South Island, bringing wintry showers with hail, and snow lowering to about 400 metres overnight.
Fiordland, Otago and Southland are expected to be the worst affected by the blast.
