“This will be a historic event… absolutely. It is a historic event,” said Dave Zaff of the National Weather Service in Buffalo. “A stunning amount of snow.”
A massive early season storm dumped record snowfall on the Buffalo city area overnight Tuesday, trapping people in their cars and homes and killing four people, US authorities said.
Many areas south of Buffalo were socked with up to 1.8 meters (6 ft) in less than 24 hours. More snow is on the way.
“Some parts of our county are going to receive a year’s worth of snowfall in three days,” Erie county executive Mark Poloncarz told local media.
Local media reported at least one person was trapped after a roof collapsed into a home.
Highway crews were in a dilemma; snow plows generally cannot operate effectively with snowfalls over one meter.
