Transmission lines snapped in many places
SHIMLA/MANALI: 15 Dec 2014 – Intense cold has gripped the entire Himachal Pradesh with unprecedented snowfall in areas where it had not snowed in many years. Snow not only covered Kullu, Bhuntar, Bajaura but also Panarsa area in Mandi district where snowing is not common. Across the state hundreds of roads were blocked throwing normal life out of gear.
Snowfall in many parts of Himachal Pradesh started on Saturday and continued till Sunday afternoon. In Shimla 8 cm snowfall was recorded on Sunday. At Jakhu it was around one and half feet, Kufri two feet, Narkanda three feet, while in Manali it was two feet (60 cm).
Heavy to very heavy snowfall in upper Kullu, including Manali, Solang, Rohtang, Jibhi, and Jalori has blocked roads, snapped power lines and knocked out telecommunication facilities.
Due to heavy snowfall transmission lines were snapped at many places, and extreme freezing cold also affected the water supply in snow bound areas of state. Chhota Bhangaland and Bara Bhangal areas of Kangra district have been cut off from rest of the world.
Snowfall time has occurred in areas which have not seen snow since many years back. In Kullu district, snowfall also occurred at Kullu, Mohal, Bhuntar, Bajaura and upto Panarsa in Mandi district much to the surprise of local residents as they had least expected it.
