The five inches (12.7 cm) of snow that fell in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Monday (Jan 5) broke the old record of 3.9 inches set in 1951.
Meanwhile, low temperatures and wind were expected to create dangerously low wind chills through Thursday morning.
Wind chill advisories were issued for parts of South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota, including the counties of Kingsbury, Brookings, Miner, Lake, Moody and Minnehaha in South Dakota; Lyon, Osceoloa, Dickinson, O’Brien, Clay, Buena Vista in Iowa; Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Cottonwood, Nobles, Jackson, Pipestone, Rock, Beadle in Minnesota.
On Tuesday, Sioux Falls was bracing for wind chill values as low as -31 degrees (-35 C).
