Earlier this month the charity Age UK warned one older person could die every seven minutes from the cold this winter.
Grieving relatives are being forced to wait up to three weeks to bury their loved ones because a surge in winter deaths has left mortuaries overflowing.
The cold snap currently gripping Britain has led to a higher number of deaths across the country, leaving hospital morgues overstretched.
At Nottingham Queen’s Medical Centre, managers said the recent cold weather meant more people were dying from falls and respiratory problems, putting pressure on services.
David Selwyn, clinical director for diagnostics and clinical support at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, blamed the backlog on “exceptional winter pressures”.
