“We have had a series of bumper ski seasons in the Scottish Highlands with record snow falls and duration,” says reader Ron Greer.
“Though of moderate altitude ( 3 – 4.4 thousand feet) and not far from a branch of the Gulf Stream, our latitude ( Glasgow is as far north as the Alaskan panhandle and Shetland as far north as the southern tip of Greenland) our cool oceanic summers and heavy precipitation mean that snow can fall in every month of the year and only July can be relied on to be frost free.
“This May has been even cooler than in 2012.
“There is now more snowpack around than at any time since the immediate aftermath of the Pinatubo eruption.
