When Nobel Laureate Ivar Giaever talks about sea-level rise, he points out that sea levels have risen 20 cm (8 inches) in the past 100 years.
However, says Giaever, for the previous 100 years, the sea levels also rose 20 cm.
And sea level also rose 20 cm in the 100 years before that.
In fact, for the last 300 years, sea levels have risen 20 cm per hundred years.
Here’s a graph showing sea level rise for the past 8,000 years, measured in meters.
As you can see, sea levels have remained essentially flat for the last 1,500 years. In fact, 2,000 years ago sea levels were even higher than today.
“There is no unusual rise in sea level,” says Giaever.
“And to be you understand that, I’ll repeat that. There is NO unusual rise in sea level.”
