China – Unexpectedly early snow

Prompts authorities to start providing heating eight days ahead of schedule to make sure that every household in the capital has access to heat. 

7 Nov 2015 – Unexpectedly early snowfall blanketed Beijing and other cities in North China on Friday, causing traffic dilemmas for millions of people, and forcing cancellation of about 50 flights at the Beijing Capital International Airport.

According to the National Meteorological Center, the snowfall hit areas in Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi and Shandong provinces, and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. It is expected to continue until Sunday in most areas.

The snowfall is the earliest in Beijing since a blizzard hit the capital on Nov 2, 2009. M

Beijing routinely provides heating beginning on Nov 15, but it can be shifted to an early date if the temperature is lower than 5 C for five consecutive days.
