Heavy snow blankets western, central Japan

24 Jan 2016 – Snow fell as far southwest as Nagasaki and Kagoshima Prefectures according to local media reports.

Nagasaki received around eight centimeters of snow and Kagoshima four centimeters.

The snow was the heaviest in western Japan, where local media reported that the town of Kitahiroshima in Hiroshima saw 74 cm of snow (more than 2 ft) in just 24 hours.

The town of Suzu, in Ishikawa Prefecture, saw 35 cm of snow within the same time frame.

Swathes heavy snowfall disrupted major transportation networks with flights canceled and Sanyo Shinkansen bullet trains reducing their service.

Temperatures also fell, with the mercury in Okinawa’s capital of Naha plunging below 9 C compared to an average for the month of 16 C.
