Seven meters (23 ft) of snow still remain to be cleared on the last 3 km (2.4 miles) of road on ISERAN side Maurienne.
Despite several weeks of work and hundreds of cubic meters of snow already moved, Col de l’Iseran is not ready to open on Friday as the General Council of Savoie had planned.
Fredéric Tracq, responsible for maintenance and operation of roads in the area, said: “Four engines and six officers are on site. But we can’t work due to dangerous conditions. The drift tunnel is over 10 meters (33 ft) high.”
It is not possible at this time to announce an opening date. The parade of strawberries, mechanical shovels and loaders continues.
The ISERAN pass stands at 2,700 meters (8,900 ft).
