“John Howard accused some scientists of having a “nakedly political agenda” in their advice on global warming,” says this article by Ben Webster in The Times.
Delivering a lecture in London last night, Mr Howard criticised the “sanctimonious tone” of many who advocate costly responses to what they see as irrefutable evidence of future climate catastrophe. “To them the cause has become a substitute religion,” he said.
He criticised the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which said last month that it was “extremely likely” that man-made emissions had caused most of the warming in the past 60 years. The IPCC acknowledged that there had been a 15-year “pause”, but said this was too short a period to judge the long-term effects of emissions.
Mr Howard said that a previous IPCC report, which wrongly stated that Himalayan glaciers could melt by 2035, and leaked e-mails from climate scientists had “degraded the image of the IPCC as the unchallengeable body of scientific experts on global warming”.
“There are plenty of people around who want public money in the name of saving the planet,” said Mr Howard.
