“You Americans ain’t seen nothing yet,” says reader Argiris Diamantis.

“An astonishing, dangerous cold snap is about to descend on the U.S.” shouts the headline in the Washington Post.

Some of the coldest air in years, if not decades, is poised to pour into the U.S., with mind-boggling low temperatures.

In Montana on Sunday night, wind chills may go as low as 62 F below (-52 C), according to the National Weather Service in Glasgow.

Parts of northern Minnesota could experience wind chills down to 70 F below (- 56 C).

In Minneapolis, the National Weather Service calls the incoming cold “historic”, predicting it will be the most severe since 1996. “Highs of 10 to 20 below (- 23 to -29 C) and lows of 15 to 30 below (-26 to -34 C) are expected,” it warns.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Weather Center predicts “a non-stop 60 hour stretch of temperatures which fail to break above 0-degrees (-18 C)” – the longest such period of the past 18 years.

20 to 40 degrees F below normal

The core of the cold reaches the Ohio Valley East Coast Monday night into Tuesday, when temperatures drop 20 to 40+ degrees below normal.

All of the I-95 cities from D.C. to New York City could possibly drop below zero F (below -18 C) for the first time in nearly 20 years.
