Record lows follow record snows.
Yes, it’s been snowing more than usual this month — nearly three times what we’d typically see by now.
And the area is on course to become the snowiest January on record if the white stuff keeps falling.
Sunday’s snowfall of 10.2 inches broke the previous record of 4.6 inches, set in 2005.
For the first five days of the year, average snowfall is about 2 inches, National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Mosteiko said. But this year, since Jan. 1, accumulation at Detroit Metro Airport is 21 inches. That’s ten times normal!
A total of 37.7 inches of snow has dropped on the area for the snowfall year — which began in July — putting the metro area well above normal, which is about 13.2 inches by this time.
The record snowfall in January is 29.6 inches, set in 1978. Currently, January 2014 is tied for 13th snowiest.
Tuesday’s low temperature is also expected to set a record.
Tuesday’s forecast shows a high of 1 below zero and a low of 13 below zero. The lowest high for Jan. 7 is 4 degrees. The record low for Tuesday is 5 degrees below zero, set in 1942.
