Also a record for the day, and a good shot at the snowiest winter on record.

Billings, Montana – “By late Monday evening, the storm had dropped more than 12.1 inches of snow on Billings — including a Feb. 23 record 8.8 inches on Sunday — and ensured that it will be the snowiest February in Billings’ recorded history,” says the Billings Gazette.

“The old record was 22.4 inches, set in 1978. As of Monday night, Billings has had 25.3 inches thus far in February.

“The Sunday and Monday storms also ensured that the 2013-2014 winter will be one of the snowiest ever in Billings, with more than 80 inches already recorded. The snowiest on record came in 1996-1997, when 98.7 inches fell.

“Eighty inches gets us into the top five,” said Joe Lester, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Billings. “That’s the fifth-highest on record. If we didn’t get any more snowfall through the rest of the winter, if it just stopped after today, we’d already have the fifth-highest in Billings’ history.”

“We’ve got a real shot at 100 (inches),” said Lester, because March is typically the snowiest month of the year in Billings.
