Coldest winter on record for Upper Michigan

Also, 75 consecutive days below freezing, breaking previous record of 72 days set in the winter of 1978-79

December 1st, 2013 through February 28th, 2014 will now be remembered as the coldest meteorological winter on record across much of Upper Michigan.

Here is a summary of records broken during meteorological winter:

Ironwood, at 5.1 degrees, saw its coldest winter over 113 years of data, beating ’78-’79 by 0.8 degrees.
Munising had the second coldest winter over 102 years of data.
At the NWS office, the average temperature was 7.5F, solidly beating the old record of 8.5F set in 1963.
Manistique experienced its coldest winter over 86 years of data.

Other records at NWS Marquette:

Lowest average February temperature of 5.6 degrees, breaking the previous February monthly record of 5.7 degrees set in 1963. The coldest month ever at this location was in January 1994, when the mean monthly temperature was 2.8 degrees.
