Dangerous winter weather conditions. Heavy snow and winds gusting near 100 km/h (62.1 mph)
Friday 07 March 2014… Winter storm warning in effect for: North Coast – inland sections
This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are expected or occurring in these regions.
An intense Pacific frontal system is rapidly approaching coastal British Columbia and will move across the North Coast regions this evening. Ahead of this system strong southeast winds gusting near 100 km/h (62.1 mph) are forecast for exposed sections of the Central Coast. Winds will ease as the system crosses the South Coast on Saturday.
Warm air will spread over the North Coast inland region in advance of the frontal system and freezing rain is expected for Terrace and Kitimat this evening.
This frontal system – which has produced heavy snow with up to 35 cm (13.8″) at Kitimat by late this afternoon – will spread northeast. Further amounts will be in the 10 to 20 cm (3.9″ to 7.9″) range especially over northern regions. The greatest amounts are expected to be at Stewart where a further 30 cm (11.8″) can be expected through tonight.
As this large system slides southeast it will bring rainfall accumulations of 100 to 120 mm (3.93″ to 4.72″) to West Vancouver Island and the Port Alice area of North Vancouver Island starting tonight and continuing through Saturday.
South Coast regions, Howe Sound Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley will see between 50 to 70 mm (1.96″ to 2.76″) of rain starting overnight and continuing through Saturday.
