Third-biggest snowstorm on record so late in the season for the nation’s capital and the 10th-greatest March snowstorm on record.

And get this! Another snowstorm is on the way!

Folks along the East Coast from North Carolina to New Jersey who were hoping for a green St. Patrick’s Day got a white one instead.

The “unusually late winter storm,” as the Weather Service called it, dumped 7.2 inches (18 cm) of snow on Washington, D.C., forcing closure of federal offices, grounding flights, and closing most area schools.

(Note: Reagan National Airport, while located in Virginia, serves as Washington, D.C.’s official weather station.)

The city normally receives only about a half inch of snow in March, the Weather Channel reported.

Washington’s March snowfall total is now up to 11 inches (including the 3.8 inches from March 3), tying 1937 for eighth most on record for the entire month.

Ten inches of snow was reported at Washington Dulles International Airport (its second biggest March snowstorm on record), and 6 inches at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

The only more prolific snow-producers this deep into March occurred March 28-29, 1942 (11.5 inches), and March 27-28, 1891 (12 inches).

More than a foot (30 cm) of snow was reported in other areas, including 13.5 inches (34 cm) in Singers Glen, Virginia, 12 inches (30 cm) in Karo, Virginia, 11.8 inches in Sperryville, Virginia, and 10.5 inches in Silver Spring, Maryland.

As much as 4 inches of snow fell in southern Missouri, southern Illinois, Kentucky and far southern Ohio – 6 inches in Oak Hill, Ohio, 5.5 inches in Aid, Ohio, 5.5 inches, and 5 inches in Lampe, Missouri.

Western North Carolina, central New Jersey, and portions of southeast Pennsylvania also reported snow.

In New Jersey, the heaviest snow hit the southern part of the state, where many schools were closed or delayed opening.

Yet another snowstorm is forecast for the upper Midwest late tonight and into Tuesday, dumping as much of a foot (30 cm) on parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
