Six of the last 14 winters now in the top 20 snowiest winters on record. This is how ice ages begin.
“After a late-season snowfall, the 2013-14 season is officially the snowiest on record at both Detroit and Flint,” according to the National Weather Service.
This announcement follows the record January snowfal in Detroit and Flint, Michigan as well as the snowiest starts to the winter season through January.
The National Weather Service reported that as of 6 a.m. on Tuesday, 3.1 inches fell at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, bringing the seasonal total snowfall thus far to 94.8 inches and topping the previous Detroit snowfall record that had stood for more than 130 years.
The previous record of 93.6 inches was set in the winter of 1880-1881.
In Flint, new snowfall brought the seasonal total to 83.9 inches, surpassing the previous Flint seasonal record of 82.9 inches set in the winter of 1974-1975.
“Most people alive today have never experienced this,” said Brian Tilley, a National Weather Service meteorologist in suburban Detroit. “It’s probably the best way to sum it up, without getting carried away with superlatives.”
Tuesday’s snow left hundreds of thousands of people without power as temperatures tumbled dramatically to freezing in parts of the state.
Forecasters are calling for another six to ten inches of heavy snowfall over the western and north-central areas of the Upper Peninsula on Wednesday through Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, flood warnings are in effect along rivers in a wide swath of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

“February finished as another top 20 snowiest month with Detroit at its 9th snowiest February, Flint 3rd snowiest and Saginaw T-15th snowiest February on record,” says the Weather Service.
All of this snow has propelled southeast Michigan into the top of the seasonal snowfall records. “In fact, this winter puts 6 of the last 14 years into the top 20 snowiest winters on record.”
