Mount Aso rumbled to life on Tuesday for the first time in 19 years, belching smoke and ash 1,000 metres (3,000 feet) into the air, AFP reported.
Meteorologists warned that volcanic stones and ash could fall in a one-kilometre (half a mile) radius of the volcano, which dominates the southwestern main island of Kyushu.
Kyushu island has been struck by seven massive volcanic eruptions over the past 120,000 years.
Last month, experts warned that a another such eruption could bury an area that is home to seven million people by molten rock in just two hours.
