Many areas in southern Albania have no power or water – Floods inundate hundreds of homes
This comes after heavy rain and snow caused rivers to flood thousands of hectares (acres), hundreds of homes and many roads.
Some 600 families have been evacuated in four southern districts in Albania after flooding covered more than 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres) and killed about 3,500 sheep and cattle, authorities said.
Police and army troops evacuated scores of flooded families and their livestock in the districts of Vlore, Fier, Gjirokaster and Berat, some 100-180 kilometers (60-110 miles) south of capital of Tirana, the Interior Ministry said Sunday.
Many areas in southern Albania had no power or water. Police urged residents to cancel travel plans and more
intense rain was forecast to hit over the next few days.
Update – 50,000 hectares now flooded
The northern parts of the country have been paralyzed by snow and ice, causing serious problems in the movement of vehicles on highways.
An announcement from the Albanian Interior Ministry stressed that 50,000 hectares across the country have been flooded in the past four days and more than 420 families fled their homes.
