Hundreds of thousands lose power as temperatures plummet

About 380,000 homes and businesses across Michigan, New York, Vermont and Maine were still without power early this morning, utilities firms said.

And the worst of it is, that it is numbingly cold!

Temperatures in parts of Michigan — where some 250,000 of the outages took place — have plummeted to 0 to 10 degrees F (-18 to -12C), said Kevin Roth, lead meteorologist from The Weather Channel,

Confounding the restoration efforts is a thick coating of ice still remaining on trees, continuing to pull down lines as limbs crack from the weight.

“Stand outside for a minute and all you can hear are crashing trees, falling branches and sirens,” Sharon Kiley Mack, executive director of the Machias, Maine, Chamber of Commerce, wrote in a Facebook post, the Bangor Daily News reported.

The same storm knocked out power to another 450,000 customers in Canada.

It looks almost certain that some people will be left without heat and light until as late as Sunday.
