Three winter storms set to pound much of the United States this week

Tens of millions of people to be affected - 1,500 cancelled flights so far – School closings already reported across Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Several major winter storms are set to hit the U.S. this week, two of which are already bringing dangerous snow and ice.

The first storm slammed the Northeast today. Snowfall in New York City and Philadelphia could total 8 inches, while wide swaths of Maryland, West Virginia, and southern Ohio could see snowfall totals of as  much as 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

The second storm is expected to pound the Midwest and Ohio Valley on Tuesday, dumping up to 10 inches of snow in Kansas, up to six inches across Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, and 3 to 6 inches in Chicago and Detroit.

The Mississippi Valley could also see some of the white stuff, said said Guy Walton, a forecaster with The Weather Channel.

And finally, a third winter storm could have a high impact on the Rockies on Friday, along with a wintry mix across the Tennessee Valley, Walton said.
